What is Solar PV?

Solar PV is a technology that converts sunlight into electricity using solar panels or modules. PV stands for photovoltaic, which means that the light (photo) produces an electric current (voltaic). Solar PV systems can be used to power homes, businesses, or even large-scale power plants. Solar energy is renewable, clean and low maintenance and one of the ways of dealing with climate change because it does not use fossil fuels and does not emit carbon. 

What are the components of a solar PV?

A solar PV system comprises of several different components including:

  • Solar panels or cells: Devices made of semiconductor materials that capture and convert sunlight into electricity by reacting to photons (or light particles) in different wavelengths of the solar spectrum. Different types of solar panels have their own advantages and disadvantages.
  • Solar inverter: Solar panels generate direct current (DC) and solar inverters convert DC into alternating current (AC), so that it can be used by our appliance or fed into the grid.
  • Solar tracking system: Some solar systems can have an optional device that is used to adjust the position of the solar panels or cells. The adjustment allows the panels to face the Sun as it moves across the sky through the day, thus maximising the amount of sunlight they receive. 
  • Battery: Batteries are optional but perhaps one of the most important components of the solar PV system. They can store excess electricity generated by the system, so that it can be used at a time when there is no sunlight or when the grid is down.
  • Mounting, cabling, and electrical accessories: These are the devices that support, connect, and protect the solar PV system components. 


How does the solar PV system work?

Sunlight hits the solar panels (also known as cells) and excites the electrons in the semiconductor material. This creates an electric field across the different layers of the panels.


This electric field causes a flow of electricity from one layer to the other. In this way a direct current (DC) circuit is created.

The DC current cannot be used by our appliances, so it is transferred to the solar inverter, where it is converted into alternating current (AC).

A meter measures the AC electricity, which is then either used on-site or transferred to the grid for credit or payment.


Batteries can be used to store excess electricity and a solar tracking system can be used to adjust the position of the panels to follow the Sun through the day. New Paragraph

What is renewable energy?

Energy that comes from naturally replenished sources is known as renewable energy. It is known as renewable energy because it does not run out, unlike fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas.



An important aspect of this energy and one that is very important in our world today is its benefits for the environment and human health. It contributes to our efforts to control climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and our dependence on fossil fuels. Plus, it decreases air pollution, thus contributing to human health. What are the different sources of renewable energy?

Renewable energy sources include solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, tidal, and biomass energy. It can be used for electricity generation, heating and cooling, transportation, and many other purposes.


Some of the most common types of renewable energy are:

  • Solar energy: comes from the sun, an abundant source of clean energy.
  • Wind energy: comes from the wind, using wind turbines.
  • Hydro energy: comes from flowing water and is sourced through hydroelectric dams that can use the water pressure to spin turbines and produce electricity.
  • Geothermal energy: comes from the heat inside the earth and can be obtained by using geothermal wells that can tap into the hot underground water or steam and use it for heating or generating electricity. 
  • Tidal energy: comes from the movement of the tides and uses tidal turbines or barrages that can capture the kinetic or potential energy of the tides and convert it into electricity.
  • Biomass energy: comes from organic matter such as plants, animals, or waste that can be burned directly or converted into biofuels such as ethanol or biodiesel.
